China is an Asian country with the highest population in the world. This oriental country is also known for its rich culture. One of the prominent cultures is its traditional clothes which are characterized by bright colors, typically red. Chinese traditional costumes generally are colorful with unique design and style, especially the Chinese women dress. Actually China has several traditional clothing style as there were several different dynasties in different era, each brought different influences to the apparel. In Tang dynasty for example, the costume is glamorous while in the previous dynasties, the costumes tended to be more conservative. Women’s clothing became more stylish with various styles in the Tang dynasty. Chinese Women fashion has developed greatly since then. In the early 1900s, the style brought classiness, poise, and attractiveness to garments.

Chinese women dress is predominantly characterized by the use dark and bright colors instead of the light ones especially for ceremonial events like wedding and other celebrations. Colors represent the season of the celebration. For example, red is usually used for summer, black indicates winter, green represents spring, while white is the color for autumn. Red is also the color for wedding. Sometimes, some matching and contrasting colors are coordinated together. The dresses often represented their social status and roles in the society.

Chinese women dress has a simple design. That is why the dress often features embellishments like sashes, silk, lace, patterns, or decorated bands. The patterns use for traditional clothing is usually geometrical designs, floral, or animal patterns. These patterns have been widely used for women’s clothing since Han dynasty. At that time ordinary people dressed up differently from queens or kings. Right now, many women in China still wear traditional clothing regardless social status. Traditional clothing is worn not only for ceremonial occasions but even in daily life. People wear it for working and at home. Even in international event, Chinese people are proud to wear their traditional dresses. This shows how they love and are proud of their own culture. In order to be more practical and comfortable, the dresses are often designed with modern adaption. For example, the long sleeved dress is modified into short sleeved dress. But over time, their fashions are a little bit influenced by Western culture. This can be seen from the sweaters, business suits, and jacket. But still, the Chinese elements are used in this modern clothing. On the other hand, Chinese designs also influences clothing style in other countries as well.
